I just want to express how grateful I am for the quality of care I received during my time at Skyland. I had been to other “mental health” institutions in the past that treated me like a criminal. Skyland made me feel human and deserving of love, compassion, and opportunity. They taught me that other people’s opinion and behavior do not define my value. One of the most simple yet most helpful exercises I learned at Skyland was positive self talk. When I feel negative about myself, I tell myself the exact opposite of what I’m feeling. The more I say it, the more I believe it. I’ve been able to share this skill and others with friends who don’t have the privilege to go to a place like Skyland.
