Esketamine Therapy

Esketamine Therapy

Skyland Trail offers SPRAVATO, esketamine nasal spray, to adults with depression enrolled in our residential or day treatment programs. SPRAVATO has been proven safe and effective for adults with medication-resistant depression or depression with acute suicidal ideation or behavior.

Says Dr. Ben Hunter, Charles B. West Chief Medical Officer, "SPRAVATO can be a treatment accelerator, helping patients with depression or with suicide ideation experience quicker, more robust results."

Some studies suggest that SPRAVATO can be more effective for treatment-resistant depression than some commonly prescribed medications. SPRAVATO can be administered onsite in the Skyland Trail Glenn Family Wellness Clinic when clinically appropriate and prescribed by a Skyland Trail psychiatrist.

SPRAVATO can be used in conjunction with psychotherapy and antidepressant medications or TMS to help patients with persistent depression. Residential treatment is an ideal environment for patients to receive a combination of these therapies. Patients receive 24/7 support and observation from a multidisciplinary treatment team. The patient’s treatment team can contribute more data to inform treatment decisions. And treatments can be adjusted and optimized in real-time to achieve the best possible results while minimizing side effects.

Esketamine is FDA-approved antidepressant for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression and suicide ideation in adults. Esketamine is a nasal spray that is self-administered under supervision. Esketamine is administered only in a physician's office with a strict treatment protocol enforced by a mandatory Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy program.

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic. Currently, ketamine is only approved in the U.S. for the purposes of anesthesia. Ketamine currently is not indicated for major depressive disorder or treatment-resistant depression, though a physician may prescribe it "off label." Ketamine is typically administered through an IV or injection. Ketamine is more likely to be used as a recreational substance than esketamine.
