Mental Health Day Treatment Programs
Day treatment for mental health, sometimes called partial hospitalization program or PHP, is often the best next step after completing a residential mental health treatment program. Most Skyland Trail clients who admit to our residential treatment program step down to our day treatment program as their skills and symptoms improve.
Direct admissions to adult day treatment and adolescent day treatment are available to clients who meet clinical criteria. Clients admitting directly to day treatment must currently reside in Metro Atlanta.
Adults Ages 18+
The day treatment program for adults ages 18+ offers treatment services Monday through Friday, 10AM to 4PM. Day treatment is offered as a step down from residential care, and some adults may admit directly to day treatment. Adult clients stepping down from residential to day treatment also may be eligible to enroll in the transitional living program.
Adolescents 14 – 17
The day treatment program for adolescent clients ages 14 to 17 is offered as a step down from residential treatment, and some clients may admit directly to day treatment. Day treatment provides structure, support, and continued skill building for teen clients living with their families in the community.
Day treatment is a full schedule, Monday through Friday. Day treatment cliensts are expectedto take time away from their day-to-day responsibilities to focus on their own healing and growth.
The full day day treatment schedule does not allow adult day treatment clients to continue to participate in full or part-time employment. Adolescent day treatment clients may not attend school in-person or participate in synchronous online school programs. Adolescent day treatment continue to make progress toward graduation through integrated academic services.
PHP stands for "partial hospitalization program." The term is a bit confusing because the PHP level of care is not really related to hospitalization. Many insurance providers use the term "partial hospitalization program" or PHP.
PHP is best described as "day treatment." Clients have sufficient skills and support to live at home and come to treatment during the day Monday through Friday.
IOP stands for "intensive outpatient program."
Day treatment, or PHP, is a longer treatment day, usually a full day from about 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a step down level of care from day treatment. Clients may not admit directly to IOP. Clients transition to IOP as their skills and symptoms improve.
IOP is a shorter treatment day and may be five or three days a week.
Treatment goals for IOP are more focused on transitioning to independent living and practing skills in the "real world."
Day treatment or PHP may be an approriate level of care for someone who has completed a residential treatment program. Day treatment helps clients gradually transition back to living in the community, managing relationships, and returning to school or work.
Day treatment or PHP may also be the right level of mental health care for someone who has been going to outpatient therapy for a while without making progress. Your therapist may recommend day treatment as a more intensive treatment experience to help you take a break from daily responsibilities and focus on your recovery.
