Skyland Trail Associates Luncheon at Cherokee Town Club
Atlanta (Feb. 3, 2009) - Skyland Trail's Second Annual Associates Luncheon will be held March 20, 2009 at Cherokee Town Club. This year's event will be highlighted by guest speaker and Mrs. United States Dr. Gariane Gunter, along with a fashion show by Saks Fifth Avenue.
Dr. Gunter is a psychiatrist in South Carolina who has dedicated her reign as Mrs. United States to raising public awareness about mental illness. She has teamed up with the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), traveling the country sharing a message of hope that early diagnosis, treatment and recovery from serious mental illness is possible.
"Much of the stigma associated with mental illness is a fear of the unknown. People don't understand that medication works, that those living with mental illness are our families, friends, neighbors and co-workers. I want to make people more comfortable talking about mental illness, and encourage those who need help to reach out and get it," said Gunter
The Skyland Trail Associates are an auxiliary group of volunteers and supporters who assist the Skyland Trail staff in planning special events, holiday activities, client and family dinners, and other important occasions. Associates meet three times a year to engage in informational sessions about mental health and learn about Skyland Trail. Skyland Trail is a community-based non-profit organization that offers hope to adults with mental illness by teaching them the practical skills they need to lead productive and independent lives. We provide a unique curriculum of innovative services, tailored to the individual clients, to improve mental, physical and social well-being. Programs are offered in Atlanta on three campus-like settings and are led by a team of caring professionals who are specialists in their fields.
